Is a Cruise the Best Way to Experience Mexico? Here's My Take

Mexico is one of the most popular vacation spots for Americans, and for good reason. Between the all-inclusive resorts, beautiful beaches, and amazing food, it's easy to see why so many people love it.

That being said...my first experience in Mexico wasn't exactly what I expected.

I visited Cozumel during a cruise stop, so no, I didn't spend a week exploring the country—but I still got a little taste of what it has to offer. If you're thinking about visiting, here's what I learned and a few tips I'd keep in mind.

If It's Your First Time, Consider a Cruise

Personally, I think a cruise is a great way to experience Mexico for the first time.

Everything is planned for you, you get to explore for the day, and you always have your ship to head back to. It's a low-stress way to see a new place, especially if you're a newer traveler.

My Day in Cozumel

We spent most of the day relaxing by the rocky beach before grabbing lunch at Chile Tequila, and honestly, that ended up being one of my favorite parts of the day. The restaurant overlooks the bright blue water, has a fun tropical vibe, and is a great place to sit back and enjoy the view.

The chips and guacamole? They were good...just not the life-changing guacamole I had built up in my head.

Before you pack your bags, here are a few things I'd keep in mind:

• Pay in pesos whenever possible. If you're given the option to pay in U.S. dollars or pesos, always choose pesos. You'll usually get a better exchange rate and save a little money.

  
  

• Research the specific destination you're visiting. Mexico is a huge country, and every city, beach town, and resort has a completely different vibe. One experience won't represent the entire country.

• Have a transportation plan before you arrive. Whether you're booking an excursion, calling a taxi, or walking around town, knowing how you're getting around will make your day much less stressful.

• Stay aware of your surroundings. Like any destination, it's important to keep an eye on your belongings, avoid carrying large amounts of cash, and stick to areas you're comfortable exploring.

• Keep an open mind. A cruise port only gives you a small glimpse of a country. If you enjoy your visit, it might be worth planning a longer trip to experience more of what Mexico has to offer.

My Overall Thoughts

Would I go back to Cozumel? Maybe.

Would I book a cruise that stops there again? Absolutely.

At the end of the day, every traveler is different. My biggest piece of advice is to do your research, travel in a way that makes you feel comfortable, and don't be afraid to form your own opinion once you get there.
